Discover your library day: Celebrating creative children’s library spaces

Today is #DiscoverYourLibrary Day!

As part of the National Year of Reading, libraries and organisations all across the country are encouraging people to ‘discover their library’ as part of a national campaign to shine a spotlight on the services libraries provide.

To celebrate, we’re sharing a selection of photos from children’s libraries across our member network, captured during team visits this year. Each space showcases creative ideas that transforms library spaces into welcoming, inspiring environments for children and young people.

Young people shaping their spaces in Tower Hamlets

At the Tower Hamlets Idea Store, young people have played an active role in shaping their own environment, as part of our Youth Engagement Network. Teenagers helped design signage for the dedicated teen area, known as Teen Spot, making it feel more authentic and reflective of their voices. This

Library staff have also added creative touches, including record-style displays to showcase the graphic novel collection,turning browsing into something visually engaging and fun.

Being creative in Birmingham

In Birmingham City Council children’s library, library staff have created a paper tree around one of the buildings existing pillars and have got creative with their building space using wall space to create a ‘How tall are you in children’s characters?’ feature that brings reading to life in a fun, interactive way.

Flexible spaces at Barbican and Community Libraries

At Barbican and Community libraries, movable book furniture and a colourful alphabet rug is creating a flexible and inviting space where children and young people can feel at home while exploring new stories.

These spaces show that libraries are more than just books. They are vibrant, creative places where children and young people can go all in on their interests, whether that’s reading, storytelling, or simply discovering something new.
